This course is intended to provide a person with the knowledge of the contents of the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual (IAMSAR), Volume III, and is designed to meet STCW requirements for Search and Rescue at the Operational Level, in accordance with the 2010 Manila Amendments, specifically as stated in Table A-II/1 and Table A-II/3 for certification as Officer-in-Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) on vessels of 500 gross tonnage or more, or Master or OICNW on vessels of 5

 Prerequisites:  It is assumed that trainees undertaking this course will have sufficient familiarity with the basic principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch on board sea-going vessels, able to understand and use the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP), and familiar with operational procedures according to GMDSS.
Course Details:

On completion of the course the learner/trainee should be able to demonstrate sufficient understanding and knowledge of search and rescue and have the relevant knowledge to competently carry out the duties of officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more, or Master or OICNW on vessels of 500 gross tonnage or less on near-coastal voyages. The knowledge, understanding and proficiency should include, but not be limited to, those listed in Column 2 of table A-II/1 and table A-II/3: Knowledge of the contents of the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual (IAMSAR), AND considered to have successfully demonstrated the equivalent of Assessment OICNW 4.1.A.

Examination: In order to successfully complete this course, each candidate must successfully complete a written examination with a minimum passing grade of 70%. All lab assignments, homework assignments, exercises, and tests must be completed and returned to the instructor for credit.
