Prerequisites:
This course is principally intended for candidates who desire an endorsement on their valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine Credential as Apprentice Mate (Steersman) or Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels.
Course Details:
This course provides training to mariners who desire a license on their valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine Credential as Apprentice Mate (Steersman) of Towing Vessels.
Any applicant who has successfully completed this Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Upgrade Course (CMTIVA-33) and presents the Certificate of Training within one year of the completion of training, will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.466 for an endorsement as Apprentice Mate (Steersman) or Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels, provided that they:
- Hold a license as Master Not More Than 200 Gross Tons; OR
- Hold a license as Master Not More Than 25, 50, or 100 Gross Tons AND completed a USCG approved Upgrade Master Not More Than 100 Gross Tons to Master Not More Than 200 Gross Tons course within one year of completion of the Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Upgrade course (CMTIVA-33); OR
- Have completed a USCG approved Master Not More Than 100 Gross Tons AND a USCG approved Upgrade Master Not More Than 100 Gross Tons to Master Not More Than 200 Gross Tons course within one year of completion of the Apprentice Mate (Steersman) course (CMTIVA-33); OR
- will satisfy the examination requirement of 46 CFR 11465(f)(3) and may obtain an endorsement as Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels provided that they meet all other requirements of 46 CFR 11465(f)
Examination:
One written examination with 20 multiple choice questions is administered at the end of the course that requires a minimum passing score of 70% for the examination.
