Prerequisites:
It is assumed that trainees undertaking this course will have sufficient familiarity with the basic principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch on board sea-going vessels, able to understand and use the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP), and familiar with operational procedures according to GMDSS.
Course Details:
On completion of the course the learner/trainee should be able to demonstrate sufficient understanding and knowledge of search and rescue and have the relevant knowledge to competently carry out the duties of officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more, or Master or OICNW on vessels of 500 gross tonnage or less on near-coastal voyages. The knowledge, understanding and proficiency should include, but not be limited to, those listed in Column 2 of table A-II/1 and table A-II/3: Knowledge of the contents of the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual (IAMSAR), AND considered to have successfully demonstrated the equivalent of Assessment OICNW 4.1.A and NVIC 02-18(Ch-4) task 6.1.A.
Examination:
In order to successfully complete this course, each candidate must successfully complete a written examination with a minimum passing grade of 70%. All lab assignments, homework assignments, exercises, and tests must be completed and returned to the instructor for credit.
