This course provides training to mariners who wish to obtain an endorsement to their U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential as Able Seafarer.
Any applicant who has successfully completed our Able Seafarer (CMTIVA-1) course within one year of application will satisfy:
The examination and Marlinespike Seamanship demonstration requirements of 46 CFR 12.405 for any Able Seafarer endorsement.
This course does not satisfy any sea service requirements.
Prerequisites:
Students enrolling in this course are expected to be able to speak, write and understand English and operate a computer with an internet connection.
Enrollment:
Upon enrollment, you will have access to the online portion of the course. You can access the course my selecting “My Account” and navigating to the online courses you have purchased. Once you begin the course, you must spend a minimum of 35 hours on the online portion of the course before you will be eligible to test. Once you have completed the course hours, prepared for the examination and scheduled your exam and assessments, select the finish button on the online portion of the course.
When you register for a course at CMTI Online, you are responsible for the costs associated with registering for the course and transportation to the school for the written examination. If the enrollment process is completed and payment is processed, a refund will not be given. Please contact CMTI if you have ANY questions prior to enrollment in an online course.
Examinations:
Examinations and demonstrations: There are two written examinations. One Rules of the Road and Navigation exam is 50 questions and requires 70% to pass. The second written examination covers Deck General and Safety and is 50 questions requiring a 70% pass rating. The knot demonstrations consists of (Demonstrate 4 mandatory knots (Bowline, Square knot, Sheet bend, Clove hitch), choose 6 other knots from course for a total of 10 knot demonstrations. Finally, student must complete a 3 strand eye splice within 15 minutes.
All written examination(s) are administered at Chesapeake Marine Training Institute. The examinations are similar in format and content to the examinations given at the US Coast Guard Regional Examination Centers (RECs) and are accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard in lieu of their exams. You must call 804-642-0123 or email information@chesapeakemarineinst.com to schedule attendance for the in-person portion which includes a written examination(s) and/or practical assessments. You can schedule your in-person portion when you purchase the course. However, you must successfully complete the online portion prior to attending any in-person requirements.
