Course Approval:
Any applicant who has successfully completed this Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Upgrade Online Course (CMTIVA-33) and presents the Certificate of Training within one year of the completion of training, will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.466 for an endorsement as Apprentice Mate (Steersman) or Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels, provided that they:
- Hold an endorsement as Master Not More Than 200 Gross Tons; OR
- Hold an endorsement as Master Not More Than 25, 50, or 100 Gross Tons AND completed our Upgrade Master Not More Than 100 Gross Tons to Master Not More Than 200 Gross Tons course within one year of completion of the Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Upgrade course (CMTIVA-33); OR
- Have completed a Master 100 GRT course and a Upgrade Master 100 GRT to Master 200 GRT course or Master 200 GRT course within one year of completion of the Apprentice Mate (Steersman) course (CMTIVA-33).
- Will satisfy the requirements of 46 CFR 11.465(f) (3)and may obtain an endorsement as Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels provided that they meet all other requirements of 46 CFR 11.456.
Prerequisites:
Students enrolling in this course are expected to be able to speak, write and understand English and operate a computer with an internet connection.
Enrollment:
Upon enrollment, you will have access to the online portion of the course. You can access the course my selecting “My Account” and navigating to the online courses you have purchased. Once you begin the course, you must spend a minimum of 10 hours on this portion before the online quiz will be available. You must pass the online quiz before you will be eligible to “finish” the course. Once you have completed the course hours, prepared for the examination and scheduled your exam and assessments, select the finish button on the online portion of the course.
When you register for a course at CMTI Online, you are responsible for the costs associated with registering for the course and transportation to the school for the written examination. If the enrollment process is completed and payment is processed, a refund will not be given. Please contact CMTI if you have ANY questions prior to enrollment in an online course.
Examinations:
The written examination is administered at Chesapeake Marine Training Institute. The examination is similar in format and content to the examinations given at the US Coast Guard Regional Examination Centers (RECs) and are accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard in lieu of their exams. You must call 804-642-0123 or email information@chesapeakemarineinst.com to schedule attendance for the in-person portion which includes a written examination and/or practical assessments. You can schedule your in-person portion when you purchase the course. However, you must successfully complete the online portion prior to attending any in-person requirements.
